Stall Barn Walk-thru
-
HIGH EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTIVITY FOR THE LOWEST
INVESTMENT
-
The WALK-THRU BARN (modern flat barn) is one of the most efficient milking barns
available.
-
-
It handles large herds as easily as it handles small ones, yet gives the
individual cow the attention so many dairy managers desire.
-
The barn shown in the photo consists of 20 WALK-THRU STALLS and is equipped with
10 AUTOMATIC DETACHERS and 10 individual BACKFLUSH VALVES.
-
A milking speed of 100 COWS PER HOUR is obtained with two
milkers. Obviously the speed can be increased by doubling up on detachers and milking units. However,
if you swing the unit between two cows they have more time in the stanchion and therefore have extra
time to eat.

Operation
-
Cows enter the milking area from the holding corral on an individual basis
through one of the entrance gates.
-
-
The gate is operated by pulling on an overhead cable which activates a small air
valve. This air valve sends a pressure signal to the entrance gate valve to open the gate.
-
Only a momentary tug is required to open the gate and let one cow in. The cow
pushes a sensing bar as she walks thru and automatically closes the gate behind her. If you need to let
more then one cow in just hold the cable and the gate will stay open until you release it and the next
cow trips the gate closed.
-
The entrance gate was designed to prevent two cows from coming thru at one time
and the closing trip lever will sense even very small cows reliably. The air operation makes this gate
simple and low maintenance.
-
Once the cow has entered the milking area she finds an empty stall and locks
herself in the air operated locking stanchion. She activates the locking mechanism by touching the neck
bar when she reaches down for feed in the feed manger.
-
A manual push button is provided with the overhead controls to lock the stanchion
in case a heifer does not want to put her head down.
-
The head lock mechanism also mechanically locks the gate to the posts of the
stall, that way we are not relying on just the air cylinder to keep the gate closed during
milking.
-
At this time the cow gets prepped by the milker and is provided with feed.
-
Once the cow next to her is done and the detacher, milk retriever and back-flush
have gone thru their cycle, the milker can attach the unit to the new cow.
-
He then lets the previous cow out by pushing an air valve located on the overhead
control panel. Pushing the valve unlocks the stanchion head lock and swings the whole stanchion forward
and out of the way. The cow steps over the milk line (yes she will) and exits thru the stall. THUS THE
NAME WALK-THRU!
-
The walk-thru obviously provides you with the great advantage of individual cow
movement. A cow that takes longer to milk does not hold up the rest of the barn. In addition a cow may
be treated or pregnancy checked right in the stall.
-
-
PBI Ross-Holm can also provide a feature called "THE AUTO CLOSER". When the cow
walks out thru the stanchion a wand senses her and automatically closes the gate behind her. After the
gate is closed it is all set for the next cow without requiring action from the milker. With the time
saved the barn becomes more efficient and productive.
-
The design of the dividers provide ample room for the milker to work; also to
install two detachers and back-flush units if desired and for the in place wash up manifolds.
-
The single loop divider between the two cows is made longer to prevent one cow
from pushing the one next to her over. This lines all the cows up better and makes walking between them
to attach the milking unit a breeze.
Construction
-
Construction of the PBI Ross-Holm Walk Thru Stalls is extremely heavy. The main
posts are made of 3- inch square tubing, the gates 2 inch square tubing, the single dividers (between
two cows) are made of 1-7/8 OD. pipe and the double dividers (where the milking units are) are made of
1-5/8 OD. pipe.
-
The entire stalls are HOT DIPPED GALVANIZED and designed to bolt together
-
in the barn. No welding is required. This includes the supports for the auger
system, feeders, detachers, controls and even the pipe line.
